A Brief History of Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam’s construction began in 1931, at the height of the Great Depression, and was completed in 1936, two years ahead of schedule. Originally called the Boulder Dam, it was later renamed in honor of President Herbert Hoover, who played a key role in its conception. The project was designed to provide water management, flood control, irrigation, and hydroelectric power to the rapidly growing Southwest region of the United States.
At the time of its completion, Hoover Dam was the largest dam in the world and one of the tallest. Its creation was nothing short of monumental! Not to mention creating Lake Mead! This is the largest man-made lake in the United States providing water to the southwestern states and entertaining thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the many water activities.

Visiting Hoover Dam
Here’s a guide to what you can do while exploring this iconic landmark:
1. Take a Guided Tour of the Dam
Powerplant Tour: This is the most popular tour option. You’ll descend into the depths of the dam to see the massive generators that produce hydroelectric power. The tour also covers fascinating facts about the construction and history of Hoover Dam.
Dam Tour: A more extensive tour for those who want to dive deeper. It includes the power plant, the passageways inside the dam, and a visit to the observation deck for panoramic views of the Colorado River and surrounding areas.
Visitor Center: Before or after the tour, explore interactive exhibits that provide context about the dam’s construction, its impact on water management, and the generation of hydroelectric power.
Be sure to book ahead for the tours as they can get filled up quickly. The fee for the visitor’s center is $10 and the powerplant tour is $15 and the guided tour is $30.

2. Walk Across the Top of the Dam
Walking along the top of Hoover Dam is a must. The dam’s sheer scale is best appreciated from this vantage point. As you stroll across, you’ll straddle the Arizona-Nevada border and experience views of both Lake Mead and the Colorado River. It’s an amazing photo opportunity and a chance to reflect on the engineering wonder beneath your feet. One fun fact is that Arizona doesn’t do daylight savings time so from the end of November until the middle of March the time will not be the same in Arizona and Nevada. If you notice your time changing all of sudden when you are visiting the dam, you’ll know why!
3. Visit the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge (Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge)
This impressive bridge, completed in 2010, offers a fantastic viewpoint. It stands 900 feet above the Colorado River, making it one of the tallest bridges in the U.S. Walking across the pedestrian pathway gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Hoover Dam and Black Canyon, perfect for photography enthusiasts.

4. Explore Lake Mead
Lake Mead Cruises: For a relaxing experience, take a guided cruise on Lake Mead, the massive reservoir created by Hoover Dam. You’ll get to see the dam from a unique perspective while enjoying a cruise on the lake. Some cruises offer dinner or sunset options. If you have time, I highly recommend this.
Water Activities: Depending on the time of year, Lake Mead offers opportunities for boating, kayaking, swimming, or even fishing. Rent a boat or kayak to explore the lake’s beautiful coves and beaches.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area: If you enjoy hiking, biking, or picnicking, explore the surrounding recreation area. The park features stunning desert landscapes and unique wildlife. 5. Visit the Winged Figures of the Republic
At the entrance to the dam is an awe-inspiring sculpture called the Winged Figures of the Republic, designed by artist Oskar J.W. Hansen. These Art Deco statues symbolize human achievement and the dam’s significance. It’s a great spot to snap a photo and appreciate the symbolism behind the artwork.

6. Visit Hemenway Valley Park
Not only is this a nice park but seeing the Bighorn Sheep is something you don’t want to miss! This 10-acre park has plenty of grass for the sheep to graze, relax and get out of the hot sun. There are park benches and gazebos to sit and watch them. There is also a small path that leads you to great views of Lake Mead. There are basketball and tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a playground if you’re staying nearby and want some exercise. It’s located between Lake Mead and Boulder City.
7. Experience the Black Canyon by Raft
For an adventurous twist, take a guided rafting trip down the Colorado River through Black Canyon. These trips start below the Hoover Dam and provide a closer view of the dam’s base, allowing you to truly appreciate its massive scale while enjoying a peaceful float through the canyon.

8. Visit Boulder City
Just a short drive from Hoover Dam, Boulder City is a charming town that was built to house the workers during the dam’s construction. It still retains a small-town feel, with quaint shops, cafes, and historical landmarks. It’s a great place to stop for lunch or explore on a day trip. If you enjoy antiques, there are plenty of shops here! Make sure to also visit the shops and dining options on the outskirt of town heading toward Las Vegas. There is plenty to see in Boulder City so don’t miss it!
9. Take in the Views at the Memorial Bridge Plaza
For incredible views without the hike, stop at the Memorial Bridge Plaza on the Nevada side. This spot provides one of the best vantage points for photographing the Hoover Dam and Colorado River, without the crowds or effort required to walk across the bridge itself.

10. Enjoy a Scenic Drive
Whether you’re heading to or from the dam, the surrounding desert landscapes are breathtaking. Scenic drives along the nearby highways offer amazing views of the rugged terrain, with occasional overlooks where you can stop and appreciate the beauty of the region. You can also take one or both of the scenic drives through Lake Mead Recreational Area. You never know what you might see! The Bighorn Sheep in the picture below ran across the road in front of us near Lake Mead as we were traveling to Boulder City.
