The annular solar eclipse will be coming October 14, 2023. It is known as the Ring of Fire eclipse because you will still the outer edges of the sun. If you live in the Las Vegas area you will be able to see it from here, but not the total view you would get from other areas.

Close to Las Vegas

Valley of Fire is one of the places that will have good views of the eclipse. The park opens at sunrise so if you get there early you should be able to get a good view of it. If you drive along Rt. 50, heading to Ely, you can find a place to stop and get a good view.

Further from Las Vegas

Two other areas that will have good viewing of the eclipse are the Reno, NV area. You might want to get a hotel so you can get up early to see the beginning of the eclipse. Another area you might want to look into is Lake Powell, AZ. Maybe go for a few days and rent a houseboat!

New Mexico

New Mexico is going to have some of the best viewing. From Monument Valley to Roswell to Albuquerque it will be a full show of the eclipse. Some of the best views will be from the Four Corners area, but please be aware that all Navajo Tribal Parks will be closed from 8 AM to 1 PM MDT in observance of Navajo beliefs. This includes Monument Valley, Four Corners, Navajo Tribal Park and parts of Canyon de Chelley. Some local businesses in these areas may also be closed.

Navajo beliefs

The Navajo believe that the annular eclipse is a new beginning. The word for solar eclipse in Navajo means death of the sun. When the sun returns, it’s considered a new birth and time to make resolutions. During the eclipse, the Navajo pray and fast to prepare for the new beginning. Please respect this believe if you are in this area.

Tips for viewing

Most important, do not look directly at the eclipse. I know it seems harmless, but it can still hurt your vision. Try wearing protective glasses or look through a telescope or binoculars with protective filters. If you plan to take pictures, make sure your camera has a protective lens. Even though it is fall in the southwest, it still gets between 80 and 90 degrees, so dress accordingly.

Being that this happens very seldom in one’s lifetime, I hope you can find time to enjoy this event. Even if you just see a partial view from your home, it is truly a beautiful event.
