Where and How You Get On?

Here are several ways to purchase an America the Beautiful Pass. If you choose to order online or over the phone, keep in mind that you’ll need to physically have the pass in hand to use it at a federal recreation site—receipts proving your purchase or photos of your pass are not accepted. Be sure to purchase your pass with enough time to receive it before your planned trip.

In person: America the Beautiful passes are available at more than 1,100 locations in the U.S., including park offices and ranger districts. Most staffed fee stations, such as national park entry booths, sell passes. For a full list, check out places to get interagency passes.

Online: America the Beautiful Passes are available for sale online at the USGS store and at some retailers, including REI and L.L. Bean

Phone: To purchase a pass via phone, call 1-888-275-8747, extension 1, between 8:00 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mountain Time.

Important: You need the physical pass in-hand to use it, digital copies and receipts won’t cut it.

Grand Teton National Park

How Many People Can Use One Pass?

-Per Vehicle Fee Areas: Covers all passengers in your car (up to 15 people)

-Per Person Fee Areas: Covers passholder + 3 adults (children under 16 free)

-It works for rental cars and motorcycles as long as the passholder is present. And yes, international travelers can buy and use it too.

What If You Lose It?

Bad news: Lost or stolen passes can’t be replaced. You’ll need to purchase a new one. Don’t forget it on your trip either—no pass, no entry.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. If you’re visiting just 2–3 national parks in a year, this pass already pays for itself. Heading to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, or Red Rock Canyon? You’ve already paid for it.  Planning a road trip through the Southwest or across the Rockies? You’re saving a lot of money.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Are there other passes available?

Yes, there are other passes available, however these passes aren’t available to everyone. These passes do offer significant cost savings for those who qualify and provide the same great access to federal recreation sites. In some cases, they even allow the pass holder to receive discounted rates on camping and other added amenities. Check if any of these options are better for you before you purchase your America the Beautiful pass:

Fourth Graders

The Fourth Grade Pass is free for fourth graders (and home-schooled learners who are 10 years of age) from September 1 of their fourth-grade year through the following August 31. The pass covers the pass holder and all accompanying passengers in a private vehicle, such as parents, guardians, and other family members or friends.

Persons with Permanent Disabilities

The Access Pass is a free lifetime pass for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have permanent disabilities. Proof of eligibility and residency or citizenship is required. In addition to providing access to federal recreation sites, the pass may also be used for a 50 percent discount on some additional amenity fees, such as campsites and boat launches.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Federal Volunteers

Those who volunteer with federal agencies may be eligible for a free annual pass. This pass is for volunteers with at least 250 service hours and is only available through your volunteer coordinator.

Hit the Road with Confidence

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a road trip, the open highway, stunning scenery, and the freedom to explore at your own pace. Whether you’re planning a cross-country adventure, a weekend escape, or a scenic RV tour, unexpected bumps in the road can derail your plans. That’s where road trip travel insurance comes in, ensuring you’re covered for cancellations, medical emergencies, roadside breakdowns, and more.

If you’re wondering whether you need travel insurance for your next road trip, buckle up! This guide will help you understand the benefits of travel insurance, what to look for in a policy, and how to choose the best coverage for your needs.

This post includes some affiliate links. If you make a qualifying purchase through one of these links, we will receive a small percentage of the sale at no additional cost to you. Thanks for your support.

What Exactly Is Road Trip Travel Insurance?

Imagine you’re all packed up and ready to go, but a sudden storm, mechanical issue, or unexpected illness forces you to change your plans. With road trip insurance, you don’t have to worry about losing out on trip costs. Consider it a safety net for all those prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses, like lodging, rental cars (if you’re in an RV and need one for a portion of the journey), and even specific activities or attractions you scheduled ahead of time.

Road trip travel insurance is specifically designed for travelers who travel by car, RV, or another vehicle. It’s the perfect sidekick for those who love the freedom of a road trip but want a little extra peace of mind along the way.

Who should consider Travel Insurance for your Road Trip?

Not every road trip requires insurance but here are some key considerations to help you decide if you will need it for your trip:

-Do you have significant prepaid expenses? If you pre-paid for hotel rooms, tickets for shows or parks or are renting a house you might want to consider getting insurance.

-Are you traveling far from home? Some insurance won’t cover you if it’s less than 100 miles away.

-Are you visiting remote or unfamiliar locations? If you get hurt in a canyon while hiking, for example, you may need to be evacuated and that can be quite expensive. Consider where you’re traveling and if you might need unordinary medical care.

-Are you taking your pet with you? Some insurance companies offer pet insurance. Faye. is one that has a reasonably priced pet insurance add-on. Will you feel more at ease with financial protection against unexpected expenses?

The cost of insurance is typically 4-8% of your total trip expenses. Once you answer the above questions, you can determine if it’s worth it to you or not.

Key Benefits of Road Trip Insurance

Life is unpredictable – that’s what makes road trips exciting! But sometimes, the surprises aren’t as welcome as finding a hidden gem of a diner or a scenic overlook. Here’s how road trip insurance can save the day:

Coverage for Cancellations

Let’s face it, plans change. Road trip insurance acts as cancellation insurance, reimbursing those non-refundable costs if you must cancel for a covered reason. If you’re unable to go on your trip due to covered reasons, travel insurance can cover lost payments or deposits toward a vacation rental, or prepaid tickets for a tour or show.

Trip Interruptions & Delays

Sometimes, things out of your control happen that causes you to cancel or interrupt your trip. A sudden flash flood closes the road, and you can’t go on your trip or in the middle of your trip a snowstorm hits and you have to go home. Road trip insurance can help by providing Trip Interruption coverage for these unexpected disruptions, so you’re not left paying for a trip you couldn’t complete. If you need to cut short your trip for a covered reason, trip interruption coverage can help cover your additional costs incurred. Also, under the trip interruption benefit, if your vehicle breaks down, your travel insurance may help you cover the accommodation costs, food and other travel expenses while you wait to get it repaired or make alternate arrangements

Emergency Medical Coverage

When traveling within their own country, many people may not seriously consider the benefit of emergency medical coverage. However, it is possible that your domestic health insurance does not provide any medical coverage out of state. Even if it does, there may not be any providers out of state that are within the network. Therefore, you may be subject to higher deductible, coinsurance and out of pocket maximums. Emergency medical coverage in travel insurance can help with medical bills in case of unexpected illness or injury while on a road trip.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

One thing that standard medical insurance usually can’t help with is emergency evacuation – being airlifted out of a remote location in the event of a medical emergency. Suppose you’re hiking in a remote canyon and break your leg. How are you going to get out of there? How much will it cost?  How far is a medical facility. Medical emergencies can happen at any time, and if you’re off the beaten path, evacuation can be difficult and extremely expensive. Travel insurance with Emergency Assistance and Transportation coverage can be a big help.

Protection for Roadside Emergencies

We’ve all been there – a flat tire, engine trouble, or a dead battery. Road trip insurance often includes roadside assistance services, helping you get back on track without the hassle or extra expense. While it can be helpful if Mother Nature throws some curveballs and you need evacuation coverage, look out which plans offer it and which do not. It’s not a common benefit. Be sure to check that the plan you choose provides this service, not all of them do. You might also want to check your auto insurance as they may cover this and if they do, is it better coverage that you can get with travel insurance.

Rental Car Coverage

Planning to rent a car for your journey? With road trip insurance, you’re protected if your rental car gets damaged in an accident or even stolen. Rental car companies do provide insurance, but most don’t cover accidents or if the car is stolen.

Lost or Delayed Baggage Coverage

Luggage issues aren’t just for air travelers! If your belongings are lost, stolen, or delayed while on the road, travel insurance can help cover replacement costs for clothing, toiletries, and essentials.

Ocean City, MD

Still Unsure?

If you’re still on the fence about travel insurance for a road trip, consider this: Travel protection rates are determined in part by your prepaid trip costs. If your road trip doesn’t have a lot of those, you might be pleasantly surprised at the price you pay to cover your road trip costs. Basic plans can start as low as $14 for trip cancellation and interruption coverage. More comprehensive plans might cost around 4-8% of your total trip cost.

If you’re looking for ways to save, consider alternatives. Your AAA plan or similar plan may cover roadside assistance. If you plan to visit a city and do a museum tour, you may not need to get emergency evacuation insurance. While trying to decide what insurance you may need, consider alternatives. This may help with your decision. Make sure to compare different companies to find the one that serves your needs the best.

How to Choose the Best Road Trip Insurance Policy

Not all policies are created equal! Here’s how to find the best one for your needs:

– Check the coverage limits: Ensure the policy covers trip cancellations, medical expenses and roadside emergencies at levels that match your travel needs.

– Compare plans online: There are a few sites that will do this for you, Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip are two. They are easy to use and give you a number of options.

– Read the fine print: Understand the policy exclusions, many plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions or high-risk activities unless added separately. If you still have questions, please contact your agent. They’re there to help you. Make sure you feel comfortable with the policy you get.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Road Trip Insurance

To make sure you’re fully protected, keep these tips in mind:

-Purchase Early: The sooner you buy your insurance; the sooner you’ll have trip cancellation coverage or travel protection if your plans change.

-Keep Your Receipts: Documenting your expenses will make the process much smoother if you need to file a claim with your insurance company.

-Consider Alternatives: Your credit card, AAA membership or personal health insurance may already provide some coverage. Always compare before purchasing extra insurance.

Conclusion

Road trip travel insurance isn’t always necessary, but it can provide invaluable peace of mind. If your trip involves significant prepaid expenses, travel to remote locations, or potential risks, insurance is a smart investment. By understanding your options and choosing a plan that fits your journey, you can hit the road knowing you’re covered—no matter what surprises come your way.

A well-planned road trip is all about bringing along the essentials to keep you comfortable, organized, and ready for anything. Here’s a list of items that make any road trip smoother and more enjoyable. This guide doesn’t focus on clothing as much, since that varies based on location and weather, but it does include key items to help you handle the unexpected and make the journey enjoyable.

This post includes some affiliate links. If you make a qualifying purchase through one of these links, we will receive a small percentage of the sale at no additional cost to you. Thanks for your support.

Stay Fed and Hydrated

Keeping yourself fueled with food and water should be a priority, even if you’re eager to reach your next stop. These few items will help you be more comfortable on your trip.

Reusable Water Bottle: Hydration is essential on any road trip, and a reusable water bottle makes it easy. Fill it up at water stations or fountains along the way, save money, and reduce plastic waste.

Snacks: Stock up on easy-to-eat road trip snacks. Classics like granola bars, string cheese, and PB&J sandwiches are great, but adding variety can make the journey tastier. Try nuts, popcorn, or banana nut muffins for more options.

Reusable Utensils and Insulated Mug: Avoid flimsy disposable utensils and carry your own reusable set. For coffee lovers, an insulated mug lets you bring along your favorite brew to sip as you go. There’s nothing like trying to slice something with a flimsy knife and up breaking the knife.

Cooler: A small cooler helps keep chilled items fresh. Add snacks like carrots and celery, apple slices with peanut butter, and an assortment of fruits for a refreshing boost on the road. We have a cooler that’s big enough to hold a few drinks so that we don’t run out of cold drinks.

Garbage Bags: Trash can pile up quickly, so keep a few small garbage bags on hand for snack wrappers and other waste to keep your car clean and organized. We have a small garbage can that helps keep the bags from not spilling in the car.

Additional Road Trip Essentials

Here are a few more items to help you stay comfortable and prepared:

Phone Charger: Road trip activities drain your phone battery fast, so bring along a reliable charger to keep your phone powered. We keep a couple in our vehicle all the time so we never forget it.

Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from glare and squinting while driving. They’ll be a lifesaver on bright, sunny days.

Blanket: A cozy blanket is perfect for those moments when you want to nap or warm up on a chilly drive. It also comes in handy if you have an unexpected car problems and have to wait for help.

Day Pack: For road trip stops and day excursions, a day pack is essential. You can load it up with snacks, water, sunscreen, and any other items you’ll need for a short adventure.

Essentials for Comfort and Convenience

Be prepared for all sorts of activities and weather changes with these helpful items. Some personal care items are necessities that you want to keep close in the car and there are a few here that will help you stay fresh and comfortable.

Quick-Dry Towel: Perfect for spontaneous swims or beach stops, a quick-dry towel won’t get musty and dries fast, making it convenient for the road.

First Aid Kit: Having a well-stocked first aid kit with items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relief is invaluable for unexpected scrapes or minor injuries.

Sunscreen: This is good all year round. The sun can burn you even in cold weather.

Lip Balm with SPF: This comes in handy anytime, but it’s really helpful on a windy day.

Bug Spray: If you plan on spending much time outdoors, this is a must.

OTC Med Kit: Fill this with basics like painkillers, allergy meds, and motion sickness remedies.

Wet Wipes: Alway handy for quick clean-ups.

Wrinkle Release Spray and a Tide Stain Pen: This will keep you looking fresh on your trip.

Basic Clothing Extras

Depending on your destination and the season, these items are helpful to keep close by for any quick stops or if you plan on spending a little time on an unplanned stop.

Jacket: Weather can be unpredictable, so pack a lightweight or heavier jacket as needed.

Hat: A sunhat or cap protects your face from sunburn and can actually keep you cooler while a beanie or cap is a must in colder weather.

Gloves and Extra Shoes: Gloves come in handy when it gets a little chilly and you don’t want your hands in your pockets the whole time.  An extra pair of shoes is also handy if your main pair gets wet or muddy.

Conclusion

With these essentials, you’ll be ready for a comfortable and memorable road trip experience. Consider getting travel insurance for those unexpected things that come up. We recommend Faye Insurance they cover all of your travel needs. Make sure to pack smart, stay organized, and enjoy the adventure ahead!

We enjoy providing people with tips we’ve learned to help make their vacation travel easier and more enjoyable. We hope to inspire people to find their adventures and make memories. You never know what you might find just an hour or so from home, so get out there and have some fun!

Whether you’re gearing up for a destination road trip with planned stops or just exploring the countryside and seeing where the road leads, a little preparation can go a long way. 1. Get a Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

If your vehicle has shown signs of wear recently, consider bringing it to a mechanic for a quick checkup before you go. Even if your car is in good condition, it’s still wise to run through a home maintenance checklist to make sure it’s ready for the journey:

  • Check the Tire Treads: Look for any bulges, uneven wear, or other visible issues.
  • Check Tire Pressure: Ensure each tire is at the recommended pressure, refer to your car manual for specifics.
  • Consider Your Oil Change Timeline: Make sure it’s not due soon and consider topping up if needed.
  • Top Off Fluids: Check wiper fluid and keep extra with you. Check your wipers too. We leave in the dry desert and we have to change ours every 6-9 months because of the sun.

2. Start with a Clean, Organized Car

Having a clean car makes a big difference for your comfort. Remove clutter, vacuum the interior, wipe down surfaces, and clean the windows. You’ll appreciate a tidy car as the miles roll by, and it’s easier to stay organized if you start that way.

3. Pack Essential Vehicle Supplies

Every vehicle should have a few basics, not just for road trips but for everyday travel. Make sure you have:

  • License, Registration, and Insurance Cards: Keep these documents in an accessible spot.
  • Spare Tire & Tools: Along with the spare tire, double-check you have a jack and lug wrench, and refresh yourself on how to change a tire if needed.
  • Jumper Cables or Jump-Start Kit: If your battery is low, a jump-start kit can be a lifesaver until you can replace it.
  • Manual Tire Pressure Gauge: Handy to check tire pressure anytime.
  • 12v Tire Pump and Patch Kit: These are helpful for minor tire issues that may arise.
  • Flashlight or Headlamp: A must-have if you encounter car issues after dark.
  • Roadside Assistance Kit: Reflective vests, flares, and rain ponchos are helpful for roadside repairs, safety is always a priority. This kit has everything you need and maybe more, but I like to be on the safe side, so we got this one for our trips.
  • Sunshade & Blanket: Keep a sunshade to keep your car cool, and a blanket in case of chilly waits for assistance.

4. Glove Box Essentials

The glove box is perfect for a few must-haves:

  • Napkins and Tissues: Handy for spills and small messes.
  • Extra Toilet Paper: In case you need it at rest stops.
  • Hand Sanitizer & Trash Bags: Essential for quick cleanups and disposal of wrappers. If you have the space, a small garbage can is a great idea so that nothing falls out of the trash bag.

5. Keep Things Organized

Staying organized makes a road trip smoother and keeps the car pleasant for everyone:

  • Over-the-Seat Organizers: These can store snacks, maps, and essentials within easy reach. This organizer is a little longer than the one in the picture, but it has large pockets and one that will even hold a touch screen tablet if you have kids in the back.
  • Packing Cubes & Duffel Bags: Ideal for packing and grabbing items for overnight stops.
  • Storage Bins: Great for snacks, games, and other loose items.
  • Roof Cargo Box (Optional): This can free up space and make the car feel less crowded.

6. Navigation and Electronics Prep

With much of our navigation done digitally, make sure you have both online and offline navigation options:

  • Road Atlas or Paper Maps: Essential for areas with no service.
  • Offline Maps: Download maps on apps like Google Maps or Maps.me to have directions even without Wi-Fi.
  • Hands-Free Phone Mount: For easily following directions.
  • USB Cords and Small Inverter: Keep dedicated USB cords in the car for charging, and consider an inverter for charging larger electronics.
  • Road Trip Apps: Download apps for route planning, trails, or sightseeing stops.

7. Plan Your Route & Stops

One of the best parts of a road trip is the freedom, but it’s still helpful to plan a general itinerary. Researching stops ahead of time helps you avoid missing unique attractions, scenic views, and restaurants along the way. You don’t want to miss that great diner or beautiful lake that was just a few miles off of the road you’re traveling. If you need help with planning your travels, go to Roadtrippers. If you enter this code: BTR5QTP you will save $5.

8. Safety and Insurance

Don’t forget to check your insurance details:

  • Roadside Assistance: Make sure you have a plan for breakdowns or other roadside emergencies.
  • Travel & Health Insurance: If you’re traveling out of state or abroad, double-check your coverage to avoid unexpected medical expenses. We like Faye insurance, check them out here if interested. They cover everything you need when traveling. If you’re not sure if you need insurance or how to figure out what you might need read on blog on navigating travel insurance.

A bit of planning before your road trip can make the journey much smoother and more enjoyable. With your car in great shape and packed with essentials, you’re ready to explore the open road! This is a pretty comprehensive list, but it’s good for anytime you travel weather going on a camping trip or just driving from city to city it will keep you safe and prepared for anything unexpected.

We hope to help you plan your trip so that you can enjoy yourself on your trip. We give tips about things we’ve learned along the way to help you make the most of your vacation. Go out and find your adventure and make memories to look back on. Even if you take a day trip near home, you never know what you might discover! Have fun and stay Safe!
